Modeling Land-Use Decision Behavior with Bayesian Belief Networks Ecology and Society
Aalders, Inge; Macaulay Institute; j.morrice@macaulay.ac.uk.
The ability to incorporate and manage the different drivers of land-use change in a modeling process is one of the key challenges because they are complex and are both quantitative and qualitative in nature. This paper uses Bayesian belief networks (BBN) to incorporate characteristics of land managers in the modeling process and to enhance our understanding of land-use change based on the limited and disparate sources of information. One of the two models based on spatial data represented land managers in the form of a quantitative variable, the area of individual holdings, whereas the other model included qualitative data from a survey of land managers. Random samples from the spatial data provided evidence of the relationship between the different...

Aarestrup,J.R.; Karam,D.; Corrêa,E.J.A.; Fernandes,G.W..

Aarestrup,J.R.; Karam,D.; Fernandes,G.W.; Corrêa,E.J.A..
As características analisadas variaram segundo a dose utilizada do herbicida.

We report the use of axonal transport to achieve intraneural drug delivery. We constructed a novel tripartite complex of an axonal transport facilitator conjugated to a linker molecule bearing up to a hundred reversibly attached drug molecules. The complex efficiently enters nerve terminals after intramuscular or intradermal administration and travels within axonal processes to neuron cell bodies. The tripartite agent provided 100-fold amplification of saturable neural uptake events, delivering multiple drug molecules per complex. _In vivo_, analgesic drug delivery to systemic and to non-targeted neural tissues was greatly reduced compared to existing routes of administration, thus exemplifying the possibility of specific nerve root targeting and...

Abarnou, Alain; Duchemin, Jean.
This study on the "distribution and future of persistent contaminants in coastal ecosystems, comparison between the western Channel and the eastern Channel" was carried out by the Ifremer for the Water Agency of Seine-Normandie. It provides information on the level of relatively well-known and regulated contaminants (cadmium, mercury, lead, BPC, dioxins, PAH) in sea products, as well as on that of less systematically recorded substances (silver, copper, nickel, zinc, polybrominated biphenyls, ethers, alkylphenols, phtalats). The Lower-Norman coast, from the Seine estuary and the Mont Saint-Michel, is particularly interesting for this study since this limited geographic area is home to the most extreme levels of contamination recorded along the entire...

On Optimal British Columbia Log Export Policy: An Application of Trade Theory AgEcon
Abbott, Brant.
The log export policy suggestion by Dumont and Wright (2006) is critically assessed in an effort to determine if it is based on economic efficiency. The optimal log export policy for British Columbia is derived using two different models. The first model assumes that B.C. is a small open economy, and the second is a two country model that provides B.C. the opportunity to improve its terms of trade. In both cases it is shown that an optimal log export tax when a fixed lumber export tax exists can be characterized as a problem of second best. In that scenario the optimal log export policy is a positive export tax in both models. In the second model a positive export tax is also optimal when there is no lumber export tax, but it is smaller than when the...

An Economic Analysis of Mountain Pine Beetle Impact in a Global Context AgEcon
Abbott, Brant; Stennes, Brad; van Kooten, G. Cornelis.
The economic effects of the mountain pine beetle outbreak in British Columbia are simulated using a multi-region spatial price equilibrium model coupled with a stochastic dynamic updating procedure. The simulation captures expected changes in the B.C. timber supply, growth of plantation forests in the southern hemisphere and an escalating Russian log export tax. The results indicate lumber and log prices will rise in B.C., offsetting some of the economic loss to timber producers. However, on net producers in the B.C. forest industry will experience a decrease in economic surplus.

Rent Dissipation in Chartered Recreational Fishing: Inside the Black Box AgEcon
Abbott, Joshua K.; Wilen, James E..
A canvass of the resource economics literature of the last thirty years yields a limited number of applications of economic theory to the problems of recreational fishing, especially compared to the depth of contributions to commercial fisheries over this era. This neglect may be linked to the relatively short shrift given to the control of recreational fisheries (relative to commercial fisheries) by fisheries managers in the past. This asymmetry may be justified when recreational takes are sufficiently small to be negligible for the purposes of stock management. However, it has become increasingly clear that recreational mortality, far from being insignificant, is often comparable to or greater than the commercial mortality for many species (Coleman, et...

Implications of a Doha Agreement on Agricultural Markets in Sudan AgEcon
Abdel Karim, Imad Eldin Elfadil; Abler, David G..
The latest round of multilateral trade negotiations was launched at the ministerial meeting of the World Trade Organization in Doha, Qatar, in November 2001. Agriculture is a major item on the agenda for the Doha Round. The primary focus is on the three “pillars” of the Uruguay Round agreement—domestic support, market access, and export competition. The framework for a final agreement was finalized at a Ministerial meeting in Geneva in July 2004, but contains few details on modalities (e.g., the formula to be used for reductions in tariffs/increases in tariff-rate quotas, quantitative limitations on domestic support, and the schedule for the elimination of export subsidies). Detailed proposals on a number of these issues were put forward in October 2005...

Growth, nodulation, and yield of soybean and associated weeds as affected by weed management Planta Daninha
Abdelhamid,M.T.; El-Metwally,I.M..
Two field experiments were conducted at the experimental farm of the National Research Centre at Shalakan, Kalubia Governorate, Egypt, during 2006 and 2007 seasons, to study the effect of three pre-emergence herbicides, prometryn [at the rate of 0.75, 1.5 and 2.25 kg ha-1], oxadiargyl [at the rate of 240, 480 and 720 g ha-1] and butralin [at the rate of 1.20, 2.40 and 3.36 kg ha-1], two hand hoeing treatments and a nonweeded check, on weed infestation, nodulation, growth, yield and yield attributes of soybean plants. Two hand hoeing treatments resulted in the highest weed depression expressed as the lowest fresh and dry weights of broadleaved, grassy and total weeds. The reduction percentage in weed dry matter compared to the nonweeded treatment was 98.3,...
